Why Investor Education is Important

As a client of The McClelland Financial Group, you may be aware that we deem investor education to be extremely important. We want our clients to understand why we invest the way we do. Through meeting tools, newsletter articles, podcasts, and videos, you will gain perspective on why we don’t react to short-term volatility, nor do we speculate on what we think will happen in the market regardless of economic data, political rhetoric, or global events.

It’s not only important for clients to be reminded of why they should remain disciplined in a consistent investment strategy. Financial professionals must go through the same exercise to stay educated and remain confident in the strategies in which we advise our clients.

The McClelland Financial Group is an advocate of this. Annually, we attend our 2-day educational workshop hosted by Dimensional. It is not a requirement by Dimensional for advisors to attend. They offer it solely for the purpose of reiterating the message. The workshop is intense, and the content is thorough. Unlike many other workshops facilitated by investment management companies, there are no perks for advisors to attend. We must pay our own accommodations. We must determine our own transportation to the workshop. These are all out-of-pocket costs that we are willing to front in order to deliver a consistent investment experience for our clients.

We don’t want you to worry about how Dimensional manages credit and duration risk for the bonds. Or, how they maximize premiums by selling positions out of companies that are migrating to a larger cap status. These concepts are for us to comprehend. They’re for us to scrutinize and determine if Dimensional is the appropriate investment management for our clients. We can only do this by staying informed and remaining educated.
