The Road To Recovery

CI Assante Wealth Management:

"The North American economies endured an unprecedented case of whiplash in 2020. The shock of the COVID-19 pandemic triggered the most pronounced economic contraction of the current era1, followed by record expansions in both countries. North American stock markets also suffered their fastest onset of bear markets on record. Surprising many, by year end, the main U.S. and Canadian equity indices had actually posted gains for calendar 2020. Even after the stunning setback of early 2020, investors are showing signs of optimism that positive momentum will continue through 2021. This reflects continuing confidence in a vaccine and stimulus-fueled global recovery. As always, the nascent business cycle will create opportunities and challenges for investors. This time, the balance between the ‘second wave’ of COVID-19 and vaccine inoculations will determine the eventual path back to ‘normal’. Uneven rollouts among countries will play a significant part in the speed of their relative recoveries. Having a financial plan and taking advantage of professional advice can aid in maintaining a well-positioned portfolio during this transformative period."

Picking stocks isn’t a game ... it’s really hard

WealthProfessional.ca:

"After GameStop’s shares dropped 20% as the Reddit saga rumbled on yesterday, one advisor has warned DIY investors that the stock market is "not a game". Rob McClelland, senior financial planner of The McClelland Financial Group, Assante Capital Management Ltd., compared the recent meme stock phenomenom to a fight breaking out at a sporting event – it shouldn’t happen, and it doesn’t really affect that many people, but there are isolated incidents."

Some Certainties in Life Just Need Attention

Death and Taxes. The two certainties in life. We begrudgingly pay our income taxes every year, like clockwork, but feel so uneasy when it comes to discussing the eventuality of our own demise. As if avoiding the topic will somehow delay the inevitable.

We know that it is a difficult discussion to have with your loved ones and even harder to find the right time to do so. Get togethers are about birthdays, holidays, or special events, not to discuss one’s mortality.

Leave it to us to facilitate the conversation in a TMFG Family Meeting. Let us coordinate the scheduling, manage the agenda, and provide the forum for the discussion (virtually on Zoom or physically in our boardroom). We act as an objective third party in the meeting and are simply there to help guide the conversation around the financials, estate distributions and even, final wishes.

In our years of conducting the Family Meetings, we have come to realize that it is much easier for parents to provide explanations to decisions made in the will while they are alive, rather than leaving the beneficiaries behind to speculate on their own. We have experienced tears, laughter, anger, and confusion. However, the one consistent emotion we have seen is appreciation. As hard as the Family Meeting can be, the better off the families are having had the conversation.

Speak with your TMFG advisor about scheduling your Family Meeting today or email Michelle [email protected]

Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is

The world is changing, and it is changing fast. Global climate temperatures are rising, and disastrous weather events are becoming more common. We know the way we live needs to change, and people have begun to take action. Green-friendly practices have increased in popularity within our lifestyles, from avoiding single-use plastics, eating less meat, and purchasing electric vehicles. But what about changing the way we invest our money?

We know if we want change to happen, we need to buy in at the grassroots and corporate levels. No vote for change is stronger than the vote made with the almighty dollar. Therefore, we have seen an incredible increase in demand for ESG investing. ESG investing stands for Environmental, Social & Governance. ESG sets out a specific set of criteria for choosing to invest their funds, whether that be to only invest in “Green” companies, invest in companies that take a stance on social justice, or invest in companies that support gender equality. There is a broad spectrum of ESG investing; your job is to find the criteria that best represent your beliefs.

There are plenty of options out there for ESG investing. However, we can never get away from our philosophy as investors. We want to earn a return on your portfolio. After all, that is why we invest in the first place. That is why I encourage you, if you are interested, to speak with your advisor today about ESG investing and find the portfolio that is right for you. To ensure you can achieve your retirement goals but also make a change along the way.
