Recession, what recession?

Written By Richard J. Wylie, CFA Vice-President, Investment Strategy, Assante Wealth Management

image

Even though the "Great Recession" of 2008-09 officially ended in mid-2009, investor memories of that chapter of economic history remain surprisingly fresh. The deep recession, coupled with a historic decline in financial markets, continues to draw comparisons to the Great Depression era of the 1930s. Since the end of the downturn in 2009, global economic activity has moved in fits and starts. During this time, policymakers around the world have gone to unprecedented lengths to ensure that their respective nations and economic unions have kept their collective heads above water. Unfortunately, Statistics Canada recently confirmed fears that the country had, in fact, slipped back into recession during the first and second quarters of 2015. While any period of recession is clearly unwelcome, the downturn is expected to have ended in the third quarter. For investors, focusing on the longer term and taking advantage of the calming influence of professional advice can help avoid mistakes associated with panicking when the economy weakens and markets decline.

Bring in an unwrapped toy

image

For many kids, the holiday season means presents, parties and fun with family and friends. However, the reality is that many kids won't have a Christmas this year. Coming from families with little or no money, these kids are often lucky to receive a hot meal, let alone a brightly-wrapped gift. Toy drives are a great way to support a very worthy cause - bringing smiles to the faces of needy children during a magical time of year.

We will be dropping off all unwrapped toys to CP24 CHUM Christmas Wish.

All you have to do is place your unwrapped toy under our tree to put a smile on a little child's face.

For more information please contact Zahra Buchanan at TOY DRIVE or
call 905 771 5200

Donations will be dropped off by TMFG at the CHUM Warehouse on
December 18th.

Age range from newborns to preteens.

Canada's Housing Market
Expected to Slow

image

The Canadian Housing and Mortgage Corporation (CMHC) announced in its fourth quarter outlook that they are expecting the National housing market to moderate over the next two years.  Bob Dugan, CMHC's Chief Economist, notes that "…housing starts and MLS sales are projected to moderate in 2016 and 2017."  He references a rise in the inventory of unsold homes, higher home prices and mortgages rates, and an increased supply of rental units to contribute to the slowdown.

CMHC's Chief Economist also notes that the gains in provinces such as BC and Ontario have offset the slowdown in oil-producing provinces such as Alberta.  He notes that "We expect, however, that this counterbalancing effect will decrease over time."

The Canadian housing market has been a concern for economists over the past few years as household debt has risen to record levels relative to income.  The low interest rates we have experienced have helped boost sales and prices in many markets.  CMHC noted that they expect interest rates to rise gradually starting late 2016.
