The McClelland Financial Group

The McClelland Financial Group hosted its first
Thank You Referral Dinner
at Il Mulino restaurant
in Old Forest Hill

This type of event has been on my bucket list for many years as something that I wanted to provide to our clients.

Over the last 25 years we have received hundreds and hundreds of referrals from our great clients. The event started at about 6:30 PM with cocktails followed by a wonderful three course meal.

We had the restaurant to ourselves and a great guitarist who serenaded us through the evening.

We finished off the event with unique gifts for each of our attendees. The premise for the evening was to reward those clients who took the initiative to refer one of their friends or family members to The McClelland Financial Group who followed though and became a Client over the past 18 months.

I like to believe that the clients true reward is that they have helped to improve the financial lives of their friends or family members. Thanks to those again who were able to attend this year’s inaugural event.

Millenials: First Time Home Buyers

Are you considering purchasing your first-home and have no idea where to start? If so, you’re among many first-time home buyers who have a long list of unanswered questions looking for someone to give them direction. Here is a starter list of some things to keep in mind when you are preparing yourself to purchase your first home:

Most first-time home buyers are going to want to take advantage of the Home Buyers Plan (HBP) withdrawal from their RRSP’s. If you’re one of them you will want to keep in mind that when you make an offer on a house, they will usually require some form of deposit. Before you make an offer on a house, it is recommended that you request to withdrawal funds from your registered accounts at least a few days before making your offer if you do not have any other cash readily available at hand. It does take a few days to withdrawal funds from your registered accounts and the last thing you want to worry about is not being able to make that deposit on time. If you are unsure what a Home Buyers Plan (HBP) withdrawal is and how it works – contact your advisor at The McClelland Financial Group.

Once your offer is accepted and the home purchase process begins, you’re going to need a lawyer to help you with all the closing details. Instead of researching “the best lawyers in the GTA”, give a quick call to your Advisor, they should be able to refer you to a respectable lawyer to help you with all your needs.

One of the first things on your mind after your offer has been accepted is, how am I going to afford this? Your immediate thought is likely to stop all your savings to see how your cash flow is once all your bills start coming out. This is the last thing you should do, once you stop your savings it is very hard to fit it back in again as the months pass. Instead, take a trip down to your Advisor’s office. They can help you devise a budget and plan a new savings strategy to ensure you’re still striving towards your retirement goals, even with your new mortgage payments.

I’m sure there are many other unanswered questions on your mind during this process. Your advisor shouldn’t just be there to review your investments on a semi-annual or annual basis, they should be there for you in times like these too. Don’t be afraid to reach out to your advisor at The McClelland Financial Group, I know they would be more than happy to help you during this exciting time. Oh, and Congratulations!

The Secret To Reducing Market Volatility

One of the most often asked questions I receive from both prospective and existing clients is “How do I make money in the market with minimal risk?”

It shouldn’t be as simple as it is, but the answer is “stay invested for the long term”.

A recent article by Dimensional, titled "The Uncommon Average", illustrates the benefit of staying invested. Positive returns are never assured, but investors’ odds improve over longer time periods. Click here to download the article (PDF)
