TMFG does Second Harvest… As members of The McClelland Financial Group, we don’t take for granted how fortunate we are to be part of such a successful team. With that comes a stark reminder that not everyone is in the same position.

We have a responsibility to help those without the same opportunities as us. Therefore, as a team, we decided to take time out of our work week to volunteer at the Second Harvest, a food rescue organization.

Helping with a community group like Second Harvest helps us realize that an everyday act, like eating, is something that can easily get lost in your regular daily activities. But for some, finding something to eat, is the only daily activity.

Spending time, rather than writing a cheque, seemed to be a more tangible way of helping the cause and showing that we care.

My Lessons On Patience

A few months ago, I wrote an article discussing how patience is one of the keys to be a successful investor. At that time, we were watching the markets and currency exchange rates all but eat up all the returns we had seen earlier in the year. Now at the beginning of November, we see all exchanges reaching all-time highs every day, and we see currency pulling back to a normalized level and returns moving to a reasonable level for the year.

My lessons on patience. About 5 years ago I decided to start to use a straight razor (in Ireland they are referred to as a "cut throat"). A couple reasons for this. I read a bunch of articles and how this was the ultimate shave that every man should have the Luxury to afford. The second was my grandfather used on and from when I was 3 years old I thought it was pretty cool watching him sharpen his razor on a leather strap. The third reason is I am cheap and the idea of never having to pay a small fortune for a disposable razor blade again thrilled me.

For anyone who has tried one of these archaic suicide devices they will let you know. These things are really, and I mean really sharp. If you rush shaving you will and I mean will, cut yourself. I am not a patient person so for the first few months I was shopping at Costco to keep my toilet paper supply inventory in the house in line with the amounts I was using to blot the open wounds on my face. Over time I realized the number of cuts on my face was inversely related to the amount of time I would spend shaving. Now I donate 3 minutes each day to spoiling myself with the luxury of a hot towel and a close shave. Every now and I again I lose my patience and am quickly reminded of how important patience is in all parts of life. So ,if you see me sporting a cut on my cheek you will know I again learned a quick lesson on the importance of patience.
